How long should I study?

The suggested number of hours for a student to study per week varies due to

  1. after school commitments (part time work, sport, etc) and
  2. long term personal goals.

As a rule of thumb the minimum number of study/ homework hours per week is equal to the year number a student is in. ie.

Year 7 = 7 hours per week

Year 8 = 8 hours per week

Year 9 = 9 hours per week

Year 10 = 10 hours per week

Year 11 = 11 hours per week

Year 12 = 12 hours per week

A suggested pattern of study leading to university is

Year

Hours per week

Total hours per week.

7

1 hour per night, 6 days a week.

6

8

1.5 hours per night, 6 days a week.

8

9 & 10

2 hours per night, 6 days a week.

12

11

3 hours per night, 6 days a week.

18

12

4 hours per night, 6 days a week.

24

University

4 hours per night, 6 days a week.

24

If you are not use to studying then take SMALL STEPS.

One hour per night is better than none!

You cannot learn to run a marathon in a day. It takes years of training.

The important thing is develop a plan of study that suits you and learn to study effectively.
